Fashion Design + Illustration Basics (Edmund Burke School Summer Class)


Please note, this course is being taught at The Edmund Burke School 4101 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008

It is open to Middle and High School Students from any school. Students do not need to attend The Edmund Burke School in order to participate in this summer course.

Fashion Design + Illustration is an introductory course, no specific experience is required.

This course is perfect for students who are thinking of applying to a design school that requires a portfolio interview or for those who just want to learn more about fashion in general.


Students will be given a set of 4 Prismacolor markers, a watercolor palate, a brush tip marker, and a protective binder in which to keep their sketches. At the end of their course, students will also be given a bound and printed copy of their sketches and inspiration board along with the digital files.

This course is for the student’s own personal development. It focuses on women’s fashion design.

Fashion Design + Illustration Syllabus:  This course is for the student’s own personal development. It focuses on women’s fashion design. This course covers  Fashion Illustration & Fabric Print Design.

Fashion Illustration : In-class sketching and demonstrations, painting and coloration techniques, Croqui (fashion figure) development, drawing faces, final assignment: One complete collection (9-10 designs), inspiration page, color palate, title page

Fabric Motif Design: Final Assignment: Develop 2 fabric print motifs (one abstract and one nature-inspired) and three designs to accompany each sample.


June 17- June 21 (8am-12pm) *Must enroll on or before midnight on May 31, 2019

*There is an option to add Free Draw time to the course for an additional $100. The Free Draw will be held from 12:00pm-4:00pm in the same class room (Art class room) during the Advanced Fashion Design Course. Students that participate in Free Draw can use the time to work on their assignments from the day and their final portfolio projects. Please note, this is not an instructional class and the student can choose to work on other summer assignments as well. Students who enroll in Free Draw are not required to stay for the entire time or to attend everyday. To enroll in Free Draw, please select the free draw option from the drop down menu.


If a student withdraws prior to the final registration date they will receive a refund for 75% of their tuition.

If a student withdraws from the course after the final registration date for their selected session, no refund will be given.

This course requires a minimum enrollment of 5 students or more.* If this minimum is not met, we reserve the right to cancel the course at the Edmund Burke School. If the course is cancelled due to the minimum enrollment not being met we will issue a full refund.

*There are two classes being offered during this week, the minimum enrollment must be met for both classes.
